Investor accounts in NSDL, CDSL recorded at 2.69 cr: Govt

Total number of investor accounts at two depositories -- NSDL and CDSL -- stood at 2.69 crore at the end of November, with a demat securities worth over Rs 289 lakh crore, Parliament was informed today.

A single investor can open multiple demat accounts.

As of November this year, total number of investor accounts was 2,68,84,008 with a demat custody value of Rs 2,89,64,367 crore, Minister of State for Finance Arjun Ram Meghwal said in written reply to the Lok Sabha.

Individually, total number of investor accounts at at NSDL stood at 1.52 crore, while the same for CDSL was at 1.17 crore.
 

National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL) and Central Depository Services Ltd (CDSL) allow investors to deposit securities by opening an account. The securities such as shares, debentures, bonds of investors are held in electronic form (dematerialised form) at the depositories.

The Minister said that total market capitalisation of the companies constituting Nifty index and Sensex was Rs 57.36 lakh crore and Rs 24.36 lakh crore, respectively as on November 30.

Total turnover of Nifty and Sensex indices were Rs 14.57 lakh crore and Rs 1.03 lakh crore, respectively, during the period under review.

In a separate reply, Meghwal said that government has put in place a new framework aimed at more efficient resolution of corporate insolvencies in the form of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code.

The entire code has become operational since December 1.

RBI's June 2015 Financial Stability Report indicated that profitability of both public and private listed companies, in general, improved in 2014-15, while the leverage ratios indicated increasing trends.

"Debt servicing capacity however improved for private limited companies whereas it remained almost the same in case of public limited companies," he added.
