The fortified iodised salt produced from the refinery in Ramanathapuram district would be used in public distribution system, anganwadis and primary health centres.

The refinery has been set up following a memorandum of understanding between Tata Trusts and and Tamil Nadu Salt Corporation last year.

"Our partnership with Government of Tamil Nadu is a progressive step towards addressing growing concerns of iron deficiency, specifically in children and women," Tata Trusts Managing Trustee R Venkataramanan said.

Tata Trusts considers Tamil Nadu Salt Corporation as an important partner in its nationwide effort of lowering the cases of Iron Deficiency Anaemia.

"I appreciate Ratan Tata and Tata Trusts in helping the State government implement this project. I will continue to seek Tata Trusts support in programmes that will benefit the people of Tamil Nadu", Tamil Nadu Salt Corporation managing director Har Sahay Meena said.
