According to official figures, 56,762 spectators turned up in the 66,000 capacity stadium to cheer for the home team in spite of heavy rains that lasted for about an hour.

The match was later curtailed to 12-overs-a-side affair after the groundsmen did a fine job to get the ground ready by 10.30pm.

Last year, former English skipper-turned-commentator Tony Greig had remarked that Eden resembled a "morgue" after witnessing poor attendance in India's second Test against the West Indies.

The Eden Gardens had hosted three international matches last year in less than a months' time but all of them recorded lean attendance.
