Irani, Singh discuss steps to boost jute output

Union textiles minister Smriti Irani today discussed with her counterpart in the agriculture ministry, Radha Mohan Singh, the measures to boost jute production in the country.

In the meeting here, it was decided that both agriculture and textiles ministries will sensitise jute farmers about certified seeds for cultivation and scale up implementation of 'Jute i-Care', a programme aimed at handholding the farmers to increase the supply of raw jute.

"Urged @AgriGoI officials to include Jute under Seed Village Programme & guide Jute farmers on second crop to increase income & productivity," Irani tweeted on the meeting.

The two ministers also discussed the promotion of agro textiles that can benefit industry as well as farmers since they are cost-effective and recyclable and the strategy for the coming financial year 2017-18.
 

It was also decided that Krishi Vikas Kendras will provide new machinery for jute production to farmers.
