Angry over absence of doctors and ambulance, irate villagers today set afire furniture and a jeep at a community health centre (CHC) at Themra in Odisha's Sambalpur district, police said.

The incident took place when the villagers did not find any doctor in the health centre to treat a youth who was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident near a local market, they said.

While the biker died on the spot, the youth was taken to the centre for treatment after he sustained injuries in the accident, police said.

The villagers were angered upon learning that there was no ambulance in the health centre to take the injured person to a hospital. Outraged at the sorry state of affairs, the villagers ransacked furniture and set fire to it along with a jeep parked in the premises, police said.

The situation was now under control, they added.
