BJP MLA Isidore Fernandes is all set to be the new Deputy Speaker of the Goa Assemblyas he was the lone contender for the post on the last day of filing of nominations on Wednesday.

Fernandes, elected on a Congress ticket in the 2017 polls, was among the 10 MLAs of the opposition party who had switched sides a fortnight ago and joined the ruling BJP.

A senior official attached to the state legislature department said they have received only one nomination -- that of Fernandes -- for the post of Deputy Speaker after the end of deadline.

Wednesday was the last day to file nominations for the post, which fell vacant after incumbent Michael Lobo, also of the BJP, resigned after becoming a minister in the Pramod Sawant-led cabinet.

A formal announcement on election of the new Deputy Speaker would be made in the house tomorrow (Thursday), he said.

The BJP, with 27 MLAs, has a comfortable majority in the 40-member house. It also has the support of two Independent MLAs and one from the NCP.

"I am happy to get elected unopposed to the post. I will do justice to the constitutional position, Fernandes told reporters.
