An Israeli army officer was wounded by gunfire from the Syrian side of the Golan Heights, the military said, in what was believed to have been a deliberate attack.

"During a routine IDF (Israel defence force) activity in the Golan Heights, shots were fired at an IDF force," a statement read.

"An IDF officer was lightly injured as a result."

Army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lerner told AFP that the shots were "direct fire".

There has been repeated shooting across the ceasefire line since the uprising in Syria erupted in March 2011, some of it stray.

Israel seized 1,200 square kilometres of the Golan from Syria in the Six-Day War of 1967 and annexed it in 1981 in a move never recognised by the international community.

Syria and Israel are still officially in a state of war.
