'James Bond' actor Ben Whishaw, who came out gay last year, says it takes courage to open up in public about something so private.

The 33-year-old star said he lauds everyone who has shown strength to come out as gay, reported the Daily Express.

"It's hard to have a conversation with people you've known your whole life about a very intimate thing. It's massively weighted with all sorts of stuff, whatever the wider world is saying.

It's an intimate and private and difficult conversation for most people. It takes courage and people have to do it in their own time," he added.

Reminiscing the time when he told his friends and family he was gay, Whishaw said, everyone was surprisingly lovely.

Whishaw plays a gay man coming to terms with the death of his boyfriend in his last release 'Lilting'.
