A four-year-old girl suffering from sickle cell anaemia has been adopted by an Italy-based couple from an orphanage here.

Belo Donan and Stephano from Rome yesterday completed the formalities to adopt the child, Naina, from city-based Adhar Ashram, its secretary Prabhakar Kelkar said.

The girl was brought to the ashram by police when she was one-day-old after she was abandoned by her parents, he said.

The Italian couple had approached the ashram through Mumbai-based social organisation 'Bal Asha Trust'.

The couple will provide the necessary medical treatment to the girl for her ailment, he said.

Sickle cell anaemia is a serious disorder in which the body makes sickle-shaped (like a crescent) red blood cells.

Sickle cells are stiff and sticky. They tend to block blood flow in the blood vessels of the limbs and organs. The blocked blood flow can cause pain and organ damage. It can also raise the risk for infection.
