In a first, about 100 retired officers of border guarding force ITBP met the newly- appointed Director General (DG) R K Pachnanda, and discussed various issues and challenges facing the paramilitary force.

The veterans, living in and around the National Capital Region, met Pachnanda at the force's headquarters here yesterday and discussed matters such as the welfare of the troops, a senior official said, adding that this was the first time such an interaction had taken place.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) chief, who took charge on June 30, had expressed his desire to meet the retired officers of the 55-year-old force, the official said.

The ITBP is entrusted with the primary task of guarding the 3,488-km India-China border. Its personnel also carry out a variety of internal security duties.

The ITBP, raised in 1962 in the aftermath of the Chinese aggression, has about 90,000 personnel and works under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
