International Telecommunication Union (ITU) should take leadership and partner with other UN organisations in executing ICT projects in developing countries, Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said today.
"India, which is also pitching for a re-election into the ITU council, wants ITU to take leadership and partner with other UN organisations and international/regional organisations in executing the ICT projects in developing countries," said a statement quoting Prasad at the inauguration of plenipotentiary conference 2014 of ITU at Busan in South Korea.
ITU is a United Nations specialised agency for information and communication technologies (ICT).
The plenipotentiary conference is the top policy-making body of the 193 member strong ITU, which meets once in every four years.
The conference holds significance in the context of India's efforts to democratise and broad-base the global affairs of telecommunications and internet governance.
"India wants the ITU to play a more active role in the global Internet governance as envisaged during the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS). It should act as a facilitating platform for Member States on public policy issues," Prasad said.
Later in the day, the Minister also met the President and the CEO of Samsung SDI Sang Jin Park in Seoul. The Minister shared with him the ideas of Digital India and initiative of 'Make In India'.
Park plans to visit India next month.
