Jammu and Kashmir government today announced winter vacations for all schools in Kashmir division and winter zones of Jammu up to class eight from November 24, more than three weeks ahead of the usual timing.

"The School Education Department has ordered that the winter vacations of the government and private recognised schools of Kashmir Division and Winter Zones of Jammu Division would begin from November 24 to February 23 of next year for schools upto middle standard (Class Eight)," Director School Education, Tariq Ahmad Mir told PTI.

Mir said the vacations for the High and Higher Secondary Schools would start from December 8 and they would also reopen on February 23.

The normal winter vacations for all classes used to start from December 15 every year but last year, the vacations started from December 1 in view of intense cold.

However, the winter vacations this year have been further advanced apparently in view of the assembly elections, scheduled to start from November 25. A large number of school buildings will be used as polling stations or to house the polling staff and security forces.

The government had postponed the annual examinations of all classes, normally conducted in October-November, to March next year due to devastating floods in the valley. The floods in September damaged hundreds of schools across Kashmir.
