A police constable was rescued by CRPF personnel from a house fire, which broke out after a gas cylinder explosion, in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district, an official said today.

Fire engulfed the policeman's first floor residence in a building in the district's jail complex last night after an LPG cylinder blast, the CRPF officer said.

"Constable Mahendra Lal of the jail police was rescued by a team led by Assistant Commandant of the CRPF's 187 Battalion, Manoj Kumar, who entered the room amid the blaze and threw a wet blanket over the cylinder and threw it outside the building. Thereafter, the personnel doused the fire," the officer said.

Lal suffered burn injuries on his right elbow and shoulder. He is being treated at a hospital here, he said, adding that the presence of mind of the assistant commandant and his men averted a major accident in the jail.
