"Twenty-four people and cattles have been rescued from Ujhm Basantar and Tawi rivers in Samba, Jammu and Kathua," officials said.

While eight persons have been rescued from Ujh river in Kathua, five are from Basantar river in Samba and 11 in Jammu, they said.

With the rescue of the 24 people, a total of 46 persons have been rescued since yesterday, they said.

Several houses in low lying areas of Jammu, Samba, Reasi and Udhampur district, besides acres of agricultural land have been flooded with water.

The Jammu district administration had sought the help of the Air Force after three to four persons were stranded amid the swollen waters in Niki Tawi area.

An alert has been sounded in Jammu region, where intermittent overnight rains resulted in the flooding of rivers yesterday.

Water level in Chenab, Tawi, Ujh and Basantar rivers are flowing above the danger mark, they said, adding that people living in low-lying areas have been alerted and warned of flash floods and also asked to keep away from banks of the flooded rivers.

"The water-level of all the main rivers is being constantly monitored," said an official of Irrigation and Flood Control Department.

"The rescue operations for the marooned people launched in all three districts were carried out under the overall supervision of Divisional Commissioner Jammu Pardeep Gupta", he said.
