Moderate separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq today laid foundation stones of four residential houses as part of his initiative to provide shelter to about 100 families devastated by the recent floods.

Under the 'Akh-Akis (one-another) initiative, launched by his charity organisation 'Daar-ul-Khair' (House of Charity), Farooq laid the foundation stones of four houses, including one for a Pandit family, in Maisuma and Kralkhud areas of the city here.

The chairman of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference appealed Kashmiri society to come forward and support the initiative aimed at providing shelters to those families whose houses were destroyed by the September deluge and were not capable of re-building their houses.

The families for whom the houses will be constructed under the initiative in the first phase include Moti Lal, a retired teacher, who had not migrated outside the Valley after the eruption of militancy.

The other three houses are of a widow Gulshana Hameed, who also lost her son while he was trying to save flood-affected people, Ghulam Mustafa Bhat, a newspaper hawker and a tailor Shabir Ahmad Rather.
