Jammu and Kashmir today got a State Data Centre (SDC) for supporting e-Governance initiatives in the state.

Inaugurating the SDC today, minister of state for Information Technology Feroz Ahmed Khan said, "we have setup a SDC for supporting e-Governance initiatives in Jammu and Kashmir. The centre has been setup by the IT department under the National e-Governance plan (NeGP)."

The data centre has been developed as a secure infrastructure for hosting and managing e-Governance application of different departments, Khan said adding, it is the first IT infrastructure project commissioned in the state.

"In the beginning, some departments started work through their own small setup of servers as per their requirement or some kind of storage for their digitized data.

But, global safety norms could not be followed in such type of setups. So, the concept of SDC as core infrastructure was evolved under the NeGP for running e-governance activities", Khan said.

The SDC will provide facilities like central repository of the state, secure data storage, disaster recovery and data set of the National Population Register(NPR).
