Jammu and Kashmir government today suspended the licenses of five local manufacturing units after sub standard drugs worth Rs 21 lakh were seized by the drug control authority.

"The Drug and Food control organization in Jammu and Kashmir have seized sub standard drugs worth Rs 21 lakh and also suspended the license of five drug manufacturing units," an official spokesman said here today.

He said that the development comes after Governor N N Vohra, directed Controller of Drug and Food Control Organisation (DFCO) to take immediate action against the manufacturers of spurious and sub-standard drugs in the state.

The Governor also issued instructions that the Director should furnish a report on the specific action taken by DFCO in the past one year to check the manufacture and sale of sub-standard and spurious drugs in the market.

Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) had informed the Governor that a large number of drug samples taken from various hospitals in Jammu and Kashmir were found not to be conforming to the standards, and out of 156 samples 27 were declared "not of standard quality".
