The golf course is being developed over an area of 190 acres of land on the banks of Indus river at Shey in Leh, more than 400 km from the summer capital Srinagar, a spokesman said.

He said that Rs 12 crore would be spent on the development of the course, which is expected to be completed by October 2013.

Meanwhile, state tourism minister Nawang Rigzin Jora yesterday inspected the progress of work of the course and interacted with engineers who are working on the project.

Completion of work on the Leh golf course will also complete the golfing circuit in the state, with a golf course recently developed in Jammu city, besides several others in Kashmir region.

Kashmir Valley has several golf courses as part of its sports tourism industry, including the Royal Springs Golf Course located on the banks of Dal lake and Kashmir Golf Course near Lal Chowk, both in Srinagar.

Two golf courses are also located at the tourist resorts of Gulmarg in north Kashmir and Pahalgam in south Kashmir. PTI AZH MIJ DBR
