J-K govt to hold Panchayat polls in March: Haq

The Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held in March this year, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Abdul Haq said today.

The Minister, during his visit to Samba here, said the government is committed to empower Panchayats with more powers to ensure that these vital units are optimally utilised for development.

He said preparations for holding Panchayat elections in March are on.

Haq said the prime concern of the government is to strengthen the democracy at grassroots level through electoral process.

He said the Panchayats and Gram Sabhas act like mini-Parliaments in rural areas and people of these areas are responsible for development works to be taken up in their respective villages.
