All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC), which was formed after the merger of the different organisations of elected Panchayat members, said the move has been initiated to put up a united front for the empowerment of panchayats in the state.

"In the next few days a AJKPC delegation would visit Delhi and meet central leadership and civil society groups for providing more powers to Panchayati Raj institutions of the state," AJKPC Chairman Shafiq Mir told reporters here.

After the Delhi visit, the organisation would hold a Maha Panchayat Conference in the coming few months, which would be attended by top leaders of the country, he said.

In a major move, various organisations of elected Panchayat members last evening joined J&K Panchayat Conference and it was renamed as AJKPC.

Shafiq Mir was announced as the Chairman of the organisation and Anil Sharma named its General Secretary.

A 31-member executive committee of the organisation has been formed, Mir said.
