J&K Police sports meet begins Thursday

About 1200 Jammu and Kashmir police personnel will take part in different sports events during inter battalion and inter zone sports meets beginning Thursday.

The week long tournament is being organised by police to mark its Raising Day on June 12 and identify the talented sportspersons in various fields and promote sports culture in the state, Inspector General of Police, Armed, Sunil Kumar told reporters here.

Kumar said the inter battalion sports meet will take place from June 12 to 16 followed by the inter zone sports meet from June 18 to 21.

He said 28 teams comprising 1200 sports personnel drawn from different Indian Reserve Police and Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police battalions would be seen in action.
 

"We will get talented sports person during the inter battalion events who will participate in inter zone tournament after conclusion of the inter battalion tournament," he said adding a total of 16 events are scheduled to take place for both men and women personnel during the week long tournament.

The events include basketball, volleyball, tug-of-war, wrestling, weightlifting, handball, kabaddi, shooting, athletics, marathon and shot-put, hammer throw and Javelin throw for both men and women, he said.

Kumar said competition in football, hockey, judo and long and high jump events will see only male players in action, while archery will be exclusively for the women.

The various venues earmarked for different events of the tournaments are Indoor stadium, Bakshi stadium, Polo ground, Zewan and Rajbagh, he said.

The IGP said organising committee headed by Additional Director General of Police, Armed, S M Sahai and various sub-committees have been constituted for smooth conduct of the event.

"We have adopted different coloured flags and track suits after dividing all battalions of both zones in six clusters," he said adding "We have adopted 'Hangul' (Kashmiri stag) as good-luck symbol - mascot for this year even with slogan of fraternity and prosperity for all.
