Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das on Monday hailed the conviction of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, and said the party has to endure punishment "for protecting the guilty".

The Delhi High Court earlier in the day sentenced Kumar for conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced him to imprisonment for life.

"Finally, justice has been done after 34 years, and former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar has been sentenced to life imprisonment," Das was quoted as saying in an official release.

The riots, in which thousands of Sikhs were killed, broke out after the assassination of prime minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984.

Describing the riots as "crimes against humanity", the high court awarded Kumar life term for the "remainder of his natural life".

"The Congress has so far been protecting the culprits of the 1984 Sikh riots, and the Gandhi family and the Congress has to endure punishment for protecting the guilty," Das said.
