Jadavpur University professor Ambikesh Mahapatra, who was arrested for posting a cartoon of Mamata Banerjee on Facebook in 2012, today welcomed the Supreme Court judgement striking down Section 66A of the IT Act.
"The move would protect common man's right to freedom of expression," Professor Mohapatra, who was arrested under the provision of the Section 66A, said.
"Section 66A should have been scrapped earlier. Under this Section, common people in several states came under the wrath of the state government for making anti-administration remarks... The same thing what happened to me," he told reporters here.

He said he hoped the move would protect the common man's right to freedom of expression, opinion and human right.
In a landmark judgement upholding the freedom of expression, the Supreme Court today quashed Section 66A of the IT Act which provides for arrest of a person for posting allegedly "offensive" content on websites.
