The Superintendent of Phagwara Sub-Jail was today arrested for receiving illegal gratification from relative of two undertrials.

Headed by DSP Vigilance Jagdish Singh, a Vigilance team raided the office of the Jail Superintendent Jaswinder Singh Sodhi in Phagwara-Banga road and found Rs 4,000 kept in a magazine on his table.

Over a two-hour-long operation was conducted. Singh later told reporters that the raid was conducted on a complaint of Neelam Kaur who alleged Sodhi had demanded Rs 10,000 from her and also threatened to shift two of her undertrial brothers Amritpal and Gurjinder to Kapurthala jail in case the bribe money was not given.

Meanwhile, she complained about it to the Vigilance department. Subsequently, a trap was laid today and the accused was arrested.

Singh said Sodhi had asked Neelam to keep the bribery amount in the magazine.

Neelam alleged that Sodhi had earlier too demanded bribe from her for keeping her two brothers in Phagwara Sub-jail which was near their residential place.

However, she did not divulge the bribe amount that she had earlier given.

Sodhi was arrested under relevant Sections of Prevention of Corruption Act.

The Vigilance team took him along to Jalandhar.
