The Department of Prisons has provided seven ambulances to various district jails in Jammu and Kashmir in an effort to provide better health care services to the inmates, a police spokesperson said today.
The ambulances were handed over to Jail Superintendents by the Director General of Prisons K Rajendra Kumar yesterday, the spokesperson said.
"The ambulance service for the Prisons will essentially minimise the delays that used to be a major cause of hindrance in getting emergency response to the ailing prison inmates," the spokesperson quoted Kumar as saying.
Kumar said it has always been the department's endeavour to provide access to continuum of health care services like diagnosis, treatment, prevention and health education to all prison inmates.
"The ambulance service will be ideally placed to be a part of the first line in the continuum of health services in Prisons and will contribute immensely to treat and transfer the ailing inmates. It will also help the Prison Medical Officers in providing timely care which can improve the clinical outcomes for patients in life threatening conditions," Kumar said.
The DG Prisons directed the Jail Superintendents to ensure that the Prison Medical Officers and Medical staff should accompany the patients during emergencies to government hospitals.
