Delhi Transport Minister Satyendar Jain today said he would "request" the Union government to roll back the steep hike in fees for issuing driving licences and fitness certificates which has angered auto-rickshaw and taxi unions.
Jain said increasing the fees by up to six times was not correct and if the central government wanted to increase the fees, it should have hiked them gradually by 20 to 25 percent.
"I will talk to Union minister Nitin Gadkari and request him to roll back the steep hike. It is now up to the Centre whether it rolls back the hike or not," he said.
Earlier this week, the regional transport offices (RTOs) began charging the revised fees - increased from Rs 40 to Rs 200 per category (bikes, cars)- for issuing a driving licence.
According to a notification issued by the Union Transport Ministry, those applicant failing to renew their licence on time will have to pay Rs 300 and an additional fee of Rs 1,000 for each year of delay.
The decision has not gone down well with taxi and auto unions in the city. Delhi Autorickshaw Sangh and Delhi Pradesh Taxi Union have threatened to go on strike if the increased rates were not taken back.
