Senior revenue officer A K Jain was today appointed acting Chairman of the CBDT following the retirement of its Chairperson Anita Kapur.
Jain, a 1978 batch Indian Revenue Services Officer, will be holding additional charge as chairperson of Central Board of Direct Taxes, the apex policy making body of the Income Tax department. He is at present Member (Personnel and Vigilance) of CBDT, official sources said.
Meanwhile, Kapur, who retired today, has been appointed an adviser on tax reforms in the Finance Ministry for six months.

She will be contributing to the Ministry's efforts for creating better taxpayer services, bringing in an improved direct taxes regime and also help in preparing the Union Budget for the next fiscal.
Apart from its Chairman, CBDT has six members and is the supreme body for framing policy and administrative issues related to direct taxes and the IT Department.

A Finance Ministry statement said Kapur will advise the revenue department on important files referred to her by the department and she "will be examining various suggestions received for bold tax reforms in the light of hard data and likely implications and present her view to the Revenue department."
The terms of reference for her post-service engagement also said Kapur will be helping the committee set up recently under the Chairmanship of Justice (retd) R V Easwar for re-drafting certain sections of the I-T Act.
The 1978-batch IRS officer will also be presenting to the government, the statement said, "her suo moto views on certain policy matters relating to direct taxation."
She had taken over as CBDT Chairperson in November last year.
