Jaipur Mayor resigns; elections tomorrow

Jaipur Municipal Corporation Mayor, Nirmal Nahta, today resigned from the post stating personal reasons, an official said.

Nahta submitted his resignation to the Director of Local Self Government (LSG), Pawan Arora, who said mayoral elections will be conducted tomorrow.

"The Mayor has resigned stating personal reasons and his resignation has been accepted," Arora said, adding he has intimated the State Election Commission on the elections for a new mayor.

"The commission has directed (the district administration ) to conduct the elections tomorrow," Jaipur Collector Siddarth Mahajan said.

There are 91 councillors in the municipal corporation and the BJP has a majority with 64 councillors.
 

After Nahta's resignation, state BJP chief Ashok Parnami held a meeting with the party's councillors and gave them necessary instructions for the elections.

Nahta was not available for comments.
