Jaisalmer sizzles at 43 deg;rains push river water level in UP

Hot and humid weather conditions prevailed in several parts of the country today with Jaisalmer scorching at 43 degrees Celsius even as rains in some areas of Uttar pushed water level in major rivers in the state.

In Rajasthan, Barmer recorded a high of 42.8 degrees Celsius followed by Bikaner and Churu posting 42.5 degrees Celsius each. Jaipur, Sriganganagar and Ajmer recorded 37.9, 37.5 and 37.4 degrees Celsius respectively.

Rainfall of 11 cm occured in parts of Ajmer bringing some respite from heat in that region, the MeT office there said.

It was sultry day in the national capital also with a high of 37.4 degrees Celsius while the humidity reached up to 79 per cent.
 

In Punjab and Haryana, Hisar was the hottest at 41.5 degrees Celsius while capital Chandigarh recorded a maximum temperature of 36.9 degrees Celsius, the MeT Department there said.

In Haryana, Ambala recorded a maximum of 37.5 degrees Celsius while mercury in Karnal settled at 37 degrees Celsius, it said.

In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a maximum temperature of 36.8 degrees Celsius. In Ludhiana and Patiala, mercury settled at 35.6 and 36.9 degrees Celsius respectively.

Odisha too reeled under humid weather condition with its coastal region recording a humidity level above 90 per cent.

Malkanaganj was hottest at 39.6 degrees Celsius with a humidity level of 94 per cent, followed by Bhawanipatna, Titlagarh, Talcher, Cuttack and Bhubaneswar at 38.5, 38, 37.5, 37 and 35.9 degrees Celsius respectively.

In Bihar also, two days after heavy rainfall claimed nearly 60 lives, the weather was hot and humid.

Patna was the hottest place in the state with a high of 36.5 degrees Celsius while Gaya recorded 36.3 degrees Celsius, the MeT Department there said.

Bhagalpur and Purnea registered maximum temperature of 36 and 35.2 degrees Celsius respectively.

Meanwhile, rains lashed parts of Uttar Pradesh leading to rise in water level of major rivers in the state.

According to Centre Water Commission (CWC), rainfall recorded in Kanpur was 28.2 mm, Raebareli 40.8mm, Mirzapur 27.2 mm, Auraiya 33.6 mm and Kalpi 36 mm due to which water levels in rivers have started rising.

While the water level of Ganga is rising in Kanpur, Dalmau (Raebareli), Varanasi and Shahjahanpur that of Yamuna is rising in Agra, Auraiya, Kalpi and Hamirpur. The water level of Gomti is rising in Neemsar and Jaunpur and Sharda is flowing above danger mark in Palliakalan (Kheri).

Similarly, the water level in Ghagra river is rising in Elgin Bridge (Barbanki) and Ayodhya (Faizabad).
He said an alert was issued yesterday to fishermen not to

venture into the deep sea, and they were reviewing it today too.

Traffic resumed partially on the Mumbai-Goa national highway after a brief let up in rains in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. A single lane of the highway towards Goa was opened up for traffic this morning, they said.

Last night, heavy rains in the region had brought traffic to a halt on the highway after floods in Jagbudi river near Khed at Chiplun worsened the situation.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall coupled with strong surface wind is likely to lash several parts of Odisha tomorrow due to a low pressure in the neighbourhood.

Yesterday's well marked low pressure area over coastal Andhra Pradesh and neighbourhood now lies over north Coastal part of the state and adjoining areas of Chhattisgarh and Telangana, the meteorological centre here said today.
