Defence Minister Arun Jaitley will lay the foundation stone of the new Navy headquarters building near the South Block here on August 20.

The Navy had been fighting a battle of sorts for the 5.41 acre plot with the Army, which earlier used the piece of land for parking of vehicles and its canteen.

The Defence Minister will lay the foundation stone of the new Navy Headquarters, which will bring all naval offices spread across the capital under one roof, Navy officials said.

The Navy has plans of constructing its new headquarters at the cost of around Rs 400 crore and will make it a green building with focus on preserving energy, they said.

The Army has most of its offices in the Sena Bhawan but shares some of its wings with the Navy. The chiefs of both the forces, however, sit in the Ministry of Defence wing in South Block. The IAF has a separate building for itself which also houses the office of its chief.

After the new headquarters building comes up, the Navy intends to vacate its offices in Sena Bhawan.

Along with the Navy, the tri-services Integrated Defence Staff also does not have its own building. Jaitley recently laid the foundation stone of its new headquarters building near the airport.
