The 31-year-old actor will star alongside Hugh Jackman in the movie, which tells the story of a carpenter called Keller who seeks revenge when his daughter is kidnapped, reported Contactmusic.
The movie, written by Aaron Guzikowski, will see the actor team up with his "An Enemy" director Denis Villeneuve, who is thought to have told him about the project while the pair worked on the indie thriller.
Gyllenhaal was last seen in in sci-fi thriller "Source Code".
