Members of Nishad community today held a 'Jal Satyagraha' protest demanding five per cent job reservation under Scheduled Caste category.

Around 500 protesters submerged themselves in knee-deep water in Damodarpura village here for over an hour demanding reservation in government jobs.

The protest was held in support of the agitation launched by hundreds of persons under the banner of Rastriya Ekta Parishad and Nishad Mahasabha in Gorakhpur on June 7 demanding job reservation.

One person was killed while 12 others including a few policemen were injured as clashes erupted between police and agitators following which several protesters were detained.

"The protesters should immediately be released and family of the person who was killed in clashes should be compensated with at least Rs 20 lakh," former Pradhan of the village, Surendra said.

A case of murder should be registered against those who had opened fire on a peaceful agitation, he said, adding, a judicial probe should be ordered into the matter.

The protesters pledged to continue agitation till the reservation is granted.

"Future course of agitation would be declared shortly," the former Pradhan added.
