In the wake of heavy rain and snowfall, the 300-km long Jammu-Srinagar national highway which is the only surface link between Kashmir and rest of the country, today remained closed for vehicular traffic.

"The continuous rain and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir for the past 24 hours has forced the closure of the Jammu Srinagar national highway" a senior traffic police officer said.

He said that the continuous rain and snowfall has triggered massive landslides at several places along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway.

"There are reports that several vehicles including passenger vehicles have been stranded at several places on the highway," he said.

According to police, a heavy machinery has been deployed to clear snow from the highway.

"Our men and machinery is on the job to clear the road, but the continuous rain and snowfall is hampering the operation," the official said.
