Japan's agri research centre keen on joint proj in fruits

Japan International Research Centre for Agricultural Science (JIRCAS) has shown keen interest in taking up collaborative research project with Tamil Nadu Agricultural University here in tropical fruits.

With some areas of mutual interests of Japan and India, being identified tentatively, a final proposal will be prepared in due course after comprehensive discussions by authorities, a university release said today.

As a prelude, two scientists from JIRCAS had visited the department of Fruit crops in the university last week and explored the possible research areas, it said.

The team held discussion with the scientists in TNAU regarding achievements made so far and the problem to be addressed in tropical fruit crop products.
 

They were also taken to different fruit crop growing fields like mango, banana, papaya and grapes and some of the major fruit markets in and around the city, during their 3-day visit, it said.

The scientists were impressed with the production system in Tamil Nadu, particularly the high density planting system and pruning technologies adopted by the farmers, the release said.
