A Japanese man has been arrested for allegedly sneaking into unlocked apartments and cutting off the clothes of their female inhabitants as they slept, according to a report.

The 22-year-old is accused of entering an apartment in Saitama, a Tokyo suburb, last month and snipping off the female resident's clothes while she was asleep, the Saitama Shimbun newspaper said.

He allegedly stole about 10,000 yen (USD 100) from the woman and another 12,000 yen in cash at another apartment where he cut off a teenaged girl's clothes, it added.

Police were investigating five other similar incidents in the area, the report said. It was unclear if the women woke up during the break-ins.

Police were not immediately able to confirm details of the report when contacted by AFP.
