Students of 30 schools of the Valley performed "colourful folk items" at the workshop, jointly organised by union ministries of culture and home affairs, an official spokesman said.

Youths would be given a training for a fortnight period, before the final selection of best performers of all the regions in Delhi later this month, the spokesman said.

The winners would be taken to Mumbai, Ajmer and abroad.

State tourism minister Nawang Rigzin Jora, who alongwith minister of state for tourism Nasir Aslam Wani inaugurated the workshop, assured that all necessary steps would be taken for promoting and preserving the rich traditions, values and culture of the state.

Wani, addressing the participants, said the programme has already been organised in Leh, Kargil and now it is being conducted here and finally would culminate in Jammu.

However, he said the Academy of Art, Culture and Languages has already taken many initiatives in conducting cultural programmes for promotion of the culture.
