Members of the Akhil Bhartiya Jat Arakshan Sangharsh Samitti (ABJASS), an outfit representing a section of the Jat community, today held a rally in Mayyar village demanding that they be declared a backward caste.

The 'Balidan' rally was held on the occasion of the first death anniversary of Sandeep Sheoran, who was killed in alleged police firing on March 6 last year during a major protest for the demand.

The Jat leaders who spoke on the occasion said they were allegedly being ignored by the government and warned that they would not tolerate this "indifferent attitude any more."

The Jats were an educationally and socially backward community and as such they should be declared a backward caste by the Central government like the Gujjars, Sainis and Ahir communities, they said.
