Aiming to ensure that no district in the state was bereft of a government Arts and Sciences College, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today announced setting up three such new institutions in Theni, Erode and Kanyakumari.

Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly, Jayalalithaa also announced an Arts and Sciences college for her RK Nagar Constituency here at an estimated Rs 8.48 crore.

The Chief Minister recalled she had recently announced proposing five new polytechnics and constituent colleges each, even as there had been demands for new Arts and Sciences colleges.

Since there were no Arts and Sciences Colleges in the aforesaid districts, the government will establish such educational institutions in Veerapandi (Theni), Sathymangalam (Erode) and Nagercoil(Kanyakumari) at an estimated Rs 25.44 crore.

With today's proposal, no district in the state was left without a government Arts and Sciences College, she said.

Since 2011 when she became Chief Minister, her government had established 53 new colleges including four Engineering colleges, she said adding that due to the importance placed by her on Higher Education, the Gross Enrolment Ration (GER) had increased from 18 percent that year to 42.8 percent.
