Underlining the need to follow rules and regulations while driving on a road, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today appealed to the citizens of Tamil Nadu that everyone should follow the rules and regulations in order to have a safe journey.

Recalling the efforts taken by the government she said for the 2015-16 financial year, a sum of Rs 65 crore has been allotted as part towards road safety.

In her message on the 27th Road Safety Week scheduled to begin from January 10, Jayalalithaa said, the government has taken steps on road safety awareness through radio and by sending short messaging services.

As part of saving people's lives during accidents, she said, emergency medical services were operating at every 50kms on State and National highways.

"Highway patrol operate on a 24 hour basis to identify traffic violation", she said, adding funds were alloted for purchase of rescue vehicle, speed monitoring devices, and setting up direction boards and speed-breakers.

"Though the Government takes various steps on road safety, it is the responsibility of people to follow the rules in order to avoid accidents. I appeal everyone to realise it and follow the rules for a safe journey", she said.
