Addressing the conference of police officers here, she said "I have ensured an atmosphere of professionalism for policing by keeping it free from nepotism and interference from evil elements outside the government".

Noting that all the prerequisites for the functioning of a strong efficient and disciplined police force have been satisfied, she said it was expected from senior police officers that "unparalleled" results were ensured in the maintenance of law and order and in the control and detection of crime.

The Chief Minister said purchase of well-equipped vehicles, arms and ammunition and the provision of increased insurance cover, risk allowance cover, uniform allowances and other allowances have been a matter of priority for her.

It was with the same concern that she had announced the Tamil Nadu Special Police Youth Brigade during the assembly session in October last, Jayalalithaa said.

"Tamil Nadu can justifiably be proud of many firsts in the country, as far as the Police Department is concerned", she said and listed out several measures taken by her such as modernisation of the police force, all women police stations, coastal security group and launch of the project for the construction of 36,000 houses under the "Own Your House" scheme for police personnel.
