Jayantha Dharmadasa, a business magnate, will be the new chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), officials said today.

Dharmadasa, the older brother of the incumbent Upali Dharmadasa, was a former head of the SLC's politically appointed interim committee.

SLC officials said Dharmadasa's nomination has been approved by the SLC executive committee after all nominations of three other contenders were rejected.

The latest development means elections for all office bearer positions, other than the chairman, will be held on April 16.

Meanwhile, Thilanga Sumathipala, who was regarded as the front-runner to be the chairman until the rejection of his nomination, has written to the Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage calling for reasons for the rejection of his candidature.

Aluthgamage had earlier said that Sumathipala has been found to be ineligible to stand by a three-member probe committee appointed by the sports ministry.
