Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) will launch its campaign for the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls from Varanasi on May 4 with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar addressing a party workers' meet.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, JD(U) leader Satish Kumar said his party will form a "grand alliance" in the state with Congress and other parties.
The Bihar chief minister will launch the campaign with a party workers' meet on May 4 in Cutting Memorial School Ground here, he said.
The JD(U) leader said the Bihar chief minister is the "only alternative" to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the country and if the people of UP choose his party in the polls, then development on the pattern of Bihar would also take place here.
Modi represents Varanasi in Lok Sabha.
If Nitish Kumar's JD(U) comes to power in UP then lawlessness and 'goondaism' will end completely, he said.
