In a bid to win over woman voters to expand its presence, the Janata Dal (United) today asked its state units to organise dharnas demanding a ban on liquor across the country on International Women's Day.

The government in Bihar, led by JD(U) president Nitish Kumar, has imposed a total ban on liquor in the state.

The party, in a statement, claimed that the move has received huge support and its positive impact is visible in the state.

The women, who had earlier faced domestic violence, were a direct beneficiary of this decision, JD(U) secretary Afaque Ahmad Khan said.

On the occasion of International Women Day, the party would stage dharnas across the country demanding total prohibition, Khan said, adding that the dharnas would not be organised in poll-bound states.

Attacking the Centre and state governments for turning a deaf ear to this demand of numerous women organisations, Khan alleged that they were in league with liquor mafia.
