Jeera prices shot up by 1.88 per cent to Rs 16,495 per quintal in futures trade today as traders widened positions, tracking a firm trend at spot market on pickup in demand.

At the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, jeera for delivery in October shot up by Rs 305, or 1.88 per cent to Rs 16,495 per quintal with an open interest of 9,096 lots.

Likewise, the spice for delivery in October traded higher by Rs 290, or 1.83 per cent to Rs 16,100 per quintal in 14,877 lots.

Market analysts attributed the sharp rise in jeera futures prices to pickup in demand at the spot market amid fall in arrivals from producing belts.
