Jeera prices today surged 4 per cent to hit upper limit at Rs 15,080 per quintal in futures trade on speculative buying driven by good demand in spot market.

Besides, tight supplies from producing regions supported the upside.

At the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, jeera for delivery in March month jumped by Rs 580, or 4 per cent to Rs 15,080 per quintal with an open interest of 14,571 lots.

In a similar fashion, the spice for delivery in April contracts shot up by Rs 590, or 3.99 per cent to Rs 15,380 per quintal in 8,490 lots.

Analysts said besides strong demand in the spot market, restricted supplies from producing belts mainly pushed up jeera prices at futures trade.
