The robbers, who had tied up and beaten the night guards, had misguided a police patrol just before the crime by pretending to be night guards.
When they attempted to rob another jewellery shop in Kalyani Market 2, the police appeared for the second time and seeing the police the robbers decamped with cash, gold and silver ornaments worth a few lakhs.
Protesting the spate of robberies in Kalyani town, businessmen of Kalyani Market No 2 blocked the adjacent road for about two hours from 8 am and observed a spontaneous bandh at the said market for two hours.
The road block and the bandh were lifted after getting an assurance from Kalyani SDPO Chandrasekhar Bardhan that the matter would be looked into.
One of the injured night guard Bimal Das was taken to JNM Hospital.
Cash and valuables worth more than Rs one lakh were stolen from the residence of human rights activist Binayak Sen at Kalyani on Wednesday.
Kalyani Municipality Chairman Pradip Kumar Sur said ,"I have told the administration to look into the issue".
