A 50-year-old man who worked at a jewellery-making unit here allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison due to financial hardship, police said today.

Shailendra Soni, the artisan, consumed poison last night and then called his friend to say that he was unwell, a police officer from Chandan Nagar police station said today.

He was taken to government-run MY Hospital where he was declared dead.

There was no suicide note but his relatives said he was facing financial problems for the last two months, police said.

Jewellers across the country are on strike since March 2 against the one per cent excise duty introduced in the union budget.
