Upset over rejection of his love, a 29-year-old software engineer allegedly stabbed to death his woman colleague and was battling for life after attempting suicide, police said today.

25-year old Vaishya was stabbed with a knife by Venkatachalapathy after a brief altercation when she was walking towards the Perungudi Railway Station late last night after the day's work. The man stabbed himself after attacking the woman.

Both the woman and the assailant, employed with a leading information technology company, were rushed to government hospitals here.

While the woman died without responding to treatment at the Royapettah Government Hospital, the man's condition was stated to be critical at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, police said.

The incident has again brought to focus safety of women IT employees returning home at night.

In February, a 24-year old woman employee of Tata Consultancy Services was allegedly sexually assaulted and killed by three migrant workers near her office on the city's outskirts.

Following this, IT services companies were advised by police to install cameras in and around their premises and employees were not allowed to leave by two-wheelers beyond 8.30 pm and asked to take company vehicles as part of measures to strengthen security.
