Jind, Jhajjar chosen for 'Thematic Convergence Project'

The project, in collaboration with Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), would be implement on a pilot basis in Jind and Jhajjar districts of the state.

"Census 2011 reported 914 females per 1,000 males in the age group of 0-6 years in the country," said Sumita Misra, Director General, Women and Child Development Department, Haryana.

Recognising the urgent need for action to improve the sex ratio, the Central Government has decided to initiate district level action plan through the gram panchayats, Mishra said.

She said Union Minister for Women and Child Development Krishna Tirath recently inaugurated the 'Thematic Convergence Project' in New Delhi.

 

The minister had termed the project as "historic" because of its convergence at all levels from municipality, councils, department to grassroots.

Apart from Haryana, the scheme was implemented in 12 districts of Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Orissa, Maharashtra and Jammu and Kashmir.

District Gender Convergence Officers would be appointed in the seven states earmarked under the scheme.

She said the purpose of the National Mission for Empowerment of Women was to ensure empowerment of women through convergence of schemes and activities at Central and state level through setting up of National and State Mission Authorities (SMA) and State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW).
