Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, a premier medical institution in Central sector in Puducherry has opened a new facility to perform obesity and metabolic surgery with a view to reducing body weight.
Director of JIPMER Dr S C Parija who inaugurated the facility on the premises of the hospital today said in a release that incidence of obesity has been increasing in an alarming proportion across the world in general and in India in particular.
Obesity is no no longer a cosmetic concern as it is an established risk for diabetes, hypertension, cardiac problem and several other ailments, said the Director.

The facility is available in JIPMER through the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology.
Two patients underwent the obesity surgery recently and a portion of the stomach was removed recently.
